ink monograms

I'm really confused by what seems many different terms, so excuse me while I attempt to ask what I need to know using some strange terminology..

I would love to start experimenting with creating ink hand done monograms. Now I would like to use hand held blocks with the letters on it...or at least use a machine I don't know the name of to do it.
Is there a machine antique or otherwise I could get my hands on...or can it be done with loads of letter blocks?
So would like to venture down this path...but just don't know what the name of the machine that I'm looking for?

What are you putting the monograms on? Cloth? Paper? Leather?

Do you want to use wooden or metal letter blocks/type?

The Adana letterpress is probably the most common press found in the UK. It was basically built for the hobbiest. Unfortunately, I really don't know much about the craft.
